I'm talking about my blitz rating
Finally reached 1000. Took around 6 months. How about you?
Just reached 1100 today in blitz (started completely at bottom 5 months ago). Now my goal is to reach 1100 in rapid. I guess it's harder.
Maybe u were right, i played 6 rapid games and won all. My rating is 1300+ now. Rapid is definitely easier than blitz, and to those saying that blitz games doesn't improve your level; i would definitely be worse in rapid if i didn't play all those blitz games.
This is because blitz trains you to make moves in a specified time limit. Think of it this way. If you have taken many class tests and exams, surely you will feel very comfortable doing similar work at your own pace afterwards.

I don't even understand how anyone can play under 1000 Elo.
Long before the Internet, I began with 1460 (rapid) after two tournaments OTB. Product of messy and disorderly studies in various chess books through the years before I dared confront "Elo reality".
Same, as in without Internet support, my ex_wife performed 1500+ in a 9 rounds swiss slow OTB, 6 months after learning how march pieces. Produce of a personalized teaching provided by an experienced club player (me).
While the value of the Elo might not be the same anymore, still, a 1000 of today would not be more than a 1200 from the 90s.
Internet chess learning has sure some advantages, but hey, you'll never get to the place where 5 years not playing will barely damage your level, if you don't integrate some books knowledge.
Of course, some "prodigies" or what, sure can do without it (so don't bother trying to tell me about it), but hey, most of us are the guys who will go to 2000-2200 and never above it, and we need the old school studies for that.
I spoke.
I hardly hear FIDE OTB ratings which are lower than 1000.
However, in online chess, it is very well possible. There is no lower threshold for the rating. And you never know. There are probably players who started out making their very first chess move in life on Chess.com (rather than OTB casual games), so a rating of under 1000 is possible.

Sounds like she was intelligent and a fast learner with good memory. My first elo was 1119 after 2 tournaments. I also did tactic puzzles, watching youtube videos & reading books to even get to that level! I had no coach though. If i had a good one like she had, i would probably have improved at least twice as fast. Today, a year since i got my first slow chess rating, my elo is around 1250 and climbing.

Took me 2 months of binge chess. I managed to get to 1000 through July and August. I had all the time I wanted to play chess. Got about 600 games in that time, that's about 10 games a day. Crazy time, I would probably spend 6 hours a day on chess. Still am on the grind but like I quit chess for a while because too much chess made me kinda hate it not I'm getting back into it and I want to get to 2000 in a year. It's going to be hell but I've always wanted to make it to nationals, (I'm in primary school) but yeah hopefully I wont hate chess after this.

How many World Champions are under 1100 rating?

Just hit a rating of 1000 today!!! Took me about 9/10 months of playing various time modes and studying a little bit here and there. No one mentioned this earlier, but something that has helped me as a beginner has been switching the time mode every few months or so. For example, tons of blitz games can help your openings, and I also noticed that longer games can help out with an increased focus on end games. I also have a correspondence game or two going on and that has helped me learn how to plan multiple moves ahead and think deeply about possible lines and my opponents strategy more.

*Update*
Cool to see this post is still active, 2.5 years after I originally posted it! An update on my progress in blitz, should anyone find it useful, starting out as an adult beginner in 2019:
625 = 3 weeks.
800 = 7 weeks.
1000 = 2.5 months.
1200 = 4 months. (Around the time I posted this very topic 2.5 years ago!)
1400 = 5 months.
1500 = 8 months.
1600 = 1 year, 1 month.
1700 = 1 year, 6 months.
1800 = 2 years, 1 month.
1900 = 2 years, 6 months.
2000 = 2 years, 9 months.
2100 = ???
joined june 8th just reached 1007. thought Id just mentioned it now before i donk my way back to 800

Took me a couple of days over 3 months to get to 1000 rapid.
Now reaching for 1200 and then 1500.
Have had a little bit of trouble finding time to play full rapid games lately, so I have focused more on daily games, since it allows me to figure out a move at a time, whenever I have time.
I am now 1350 in daily and 1150ish in rapid, but I expect my rapid rating to climb a little bit, when I have time to play more games.
It has now been around 9 and a half months since I started.
I don't have much access to the Internet and when I do I only play a few games a week on chess.come (I practice chess for at least an hour or two every day though ) so my rating takes huge jumps when I do play. That being said I have reached 1000 in about six months and 1200 in about a year. Also I started when I was 14 now I'm 15 so I have a lot of time for books and offline puzzles and stuff like that so l might be progressing faster than others who have work or college.
