So I just started playing chess a couple of days ago. I’ve mainly been playing bullet but I like rapid better so I can really think about how to play.

Any tips on how I could get better?

Rapid is much more helpful for learning and improvement. Blitz and bullet is mostly pattern recognition and easier with experience.

I assume you know the rules and basics of chess. I recommend checking out this blog post I wrote years ago and it also has many helpful links at the bottom of the blog post.

If you aren't so sure with all the rules and basics of chess, then this link will help you instead:

First off, i recommend playing rapid for improving and bullet for entertainment, Only play bullet if you want a quick match, Blitz is in the middle of bullet and rapid and is a mix of Both, basically, The more time you can spend on a match, the more you learn.

I have seen you play mostly Bullet, I recommend playing Rapid matches too.

I assume you know how pieces move, and know opening principles, here's what you need to know:

Opponent's Threats: always look for threats, see what moves the opponents can make after your move, It's not worth losing Tempo or Pieces.

Learn Tactics: Tactics such as Pins, skewers, forks, etc will make the Middle game easier.

Learn endgames: Learn endgames such as Pawn and king vs King, King and Two bishops vs King etc, this will help you in endgames.

Look before you leap: Don't make moves without checking first, See if the square is controlled by an enemy piece, And think what might happen after it.

Pick an opening: pick A opening for white and Two for black, countering e4 and d4, making different openings each game might be too much.

In rapid, they've only played 2 games so far and their opponent average rating was in the 600s. They won both games, so that's how they are over 800 already, but with an account only 3 days old, it will probably take a lot more playing to stabilize to their true ability. It might be much less than 800 or much more than 800... or maybe 800 is about correct for them. We can't really tell this early. Give them a chance to play more and keep learning happy.png

I started playing online chess a few days ago, and I keep falling for these quick checkmates. Gotta work on protecting my king early!
Any Tips!

I think you are onto it already. Try to get castled earlier and focus on king safety. At the intermediate to more advanced levels, then you can learn exceptions of when to delay castling (or avoid it entirely), but most players benefit more from castling almost as early as possible just to avoid getting their king attacked in the opening. I made an interactive video you may find helpful. I go through several chess positions and you have to figure out which way is safer to castle (if at all) and then I share what move I played and why.

It's mostly about following key principles when playing. That approach helped me reach a 2000+ rating, and I teach others to do the same. You can learn them yourself as well. Here's an example of some chess principles: https://www.chess.com/article/view/principles-of-chess

You have a very impressive bullet rating of 500 already. You are already pretty good. Clearly, you have potential. It’s important that you begin practicing correct thinking at this early stage to allow for fast advancement.

Because you are rated 500, I recommend that you delve into strategy a little bit. You should be able to identify what a weak pawn is, when bishops are superior to knights, rules for the pieces, different types of central configurations, and the nature of subsequent play, etc.

You should also get familiar with basic theoretical endgames. Don’t worry; there are only a finite number that you need to know for the rest of your life. These include king and pawn endings, rook endings with the Lucena and Philidor positions, etc.

You should also begin solving tactical puzzles slowly. I can help you with this if you PM me.

I also have structured lessons and a curriculum to speed up your chess knowledge to the 2000 level. The rest would be helping you develop basic technique and avoid blunders. There is specialized training and guidance for that.

So the recommended book here would be:

Chess Fundamentals by Capablanca.

Jeremy Silman's endgame course is also very powerful.

Try some Chess.com puzzles too. Do custom, simple ones and drill them in. Do not rush. Be patient but consistent.

Patience and consistency are key. Lay one brick at a time and enjoy your gradual improvement. Also, emotional intelligence and psychology are something all chess players should constantly work on.

If you want my lessons, you can DM me. Probably the cheapest rate you can get for 7 hours of material. $20 once off. Thats about $3 dollars per hour.

#10 thank you so much. Having these chess terms are really helpful so I can look them up and go more into depth with them later. Thanks again 🙏

Welcome to Chess.com!chesspawn If you want to improve, i recommend you to play enough games, so that you have a realistic rating in every time control and that you know, how strong you really are. You should expect to loose a lot at the beginning. Play longer time controls like rapid and daily to improve - bulletbullet and blitzblitz isn’t good for improving. You can sharpen your tactical vision by doing puzzles.tactics You can learn from your mistakes by analyzingexplorer your games although you shouldn’t trust gamereview too much because it can be confusing and the explanation is not good. You really shouldn’t analyze too much because you probably won’t understand why you made a good or bad move. Chess.com offers you free chess lessonslessons that are worth to check out. Chess.com has lots of great chess coachescoaches who can help you to learn and improve. You can also play against a strong friendclubs who teaches you some things. You can play bots as well if you want to practice. Don’t play to much against bots because bots play like bots and humans play like humans. We can play some games together and i’ll teach you some things if you want.draw Have fun and enjoy!peshka
