Chess ELO

I guess their point is that any online rating can only be an approximation of what your rating would be if you played in actual OTB tournaments.  Perhaps they thought you were trying to pass yourself off as someone with an official rating.

Glad to help.

I said in my description on facebook that I have 1400 elo (on lichess, but didnt mention lichess) and then i got attacked that i dont know what elo is. they said elo is FIDE not anything else. now im kinda embarrassed. could anyone explain why i cant call lichess elo just elo

Not sure about Lichess, but this site doesn't even use an online version of Elo. It uses a Glicko2 rating system.

Just use quotes... You may say that your "ELO" on chess.com is 1700 (for example)

Why not just call it an online rating? Perfectly accurate, and no "quotes" required.

Btw: Lichess also seems to use Glicko2.

Glicko is just an improved version of Elo tho, still based off the same idea.
