Game rating vs puzzles

Hi all I need some advice, my puzzle rating here on chess.com is 1700 and over on another highly popular site it’s 1625 but when it comes to playing games (rapid 15/10) my rating has tanked to 500 and I just don’t understand how? The principle are the same I’m not playing any differently so what gives?

It’s really getting me down and making me fall out of love with this beautiful game…

Different ratings due to different platforms.

Your 1700 puzzle rating proves you have pattern recognition and potential. Now it's just about integrating that into real games — with focus and kindness to yourself.

Puzzle rating focuses on only two aspects of chess. That being tactics and calculation. No strategy, openings, endgame knowledge, … etc. All of which are used and needed in games. Also in games there is nothing telling you that there is a tactic there. Which in a puzzle you know there is something there. Your rating would suggest that you leave pieces hanging multiple times per game. Learning blunder checking will be most beneficial along with learning how to apply opening principles consistently and well in your games. Puzzle rating are normally much higher than rapid rating.

Hello! I'm not sure if this is "correct" but it's been my experience that puzzle tactics don't guarantee you will get into the same situations you see in the puzzles. Does that make sense? Puzzles do eventually help to improve your tactical awareness but it's just... ugh... one piece of the puzzle. As you gain more experience by playing more games, eventually you're going to see things pay off, but being good at chess puzzles does not mean you will automatically be good at chess.

Try to stay positive. At your rating, playing principled chess (developing your pieces, castling quickly, giving your king an escape hatch, moving your rooks to the center files and trying to fight for the center) - all of that is much more important for improving your rating than tactics. Honestly, advanced tactics and sacrifices are not something you need to worry about until probably around 1000 elo.

When solving a puzzle: I found that mate. When playing a game:Ah,I missed that ,it was in a puzzle,I am in trouble.

I think that is where chessbrah habits comes in. He tells you how to play the entire game without knowing any tactics

The so said "rating" in puzzles is misleading.

The most common rating system in chess, is the Elo rating system.

Chess.com uses a variation of it for the games.

The Elo rating system is based on the results of games played "rated human vs rated human".

You can check on the details and the maths here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

Or perform a Google search by yourself if you don't trust the link given by a stranger.

You'll easily see that the puzzles just can't spit out anything comparable.

The puzzles rating system is so meant to be misleading to the newbies, and encourage them to purchase a pay account through vile flattery.

So, forget about puzzles ratings since they means nothing at all regarding your chess strength.

On the side note, I'll add that your chess strenght is not just your calculating capacities. It's also your capacity to avoid blunders during the whole of a game, then of a serie of games.

Then it's also how you manage your time, refrain from playing first move you see, etc. There is a whole sports/self control aspect to this game. Then poor positional judgement will incapacitate your calculation skills, when your position is so bad, chess players will call it a "trash can" where all you can calculate is how you're going to lose the game if you don't resign.
