Many beginners play e4:

DON'T!!!!! Play d4:

Why Should Beginners Play d4 instead of e4:

why should beginners play d4 instead of e4
Beginners might benefit more from playing 1.d4 instead of 1.e4 for several practical reasons, although neither move is objectively better for all players. Here's why 1.d4 can be more beginner-friendly:

✅ 1. More Solid, Less Tactics-Heavy
d4 openings (like the Queen’s Gambit, London System, etc.) tend to lead to slower, more strategic games.
e4 openings often lead to sharper positions full of early tactics (like in the Sicilian, King's Gambit, or Fried Liver).
Beginners often struggle more in fast tactical battles than in slower, positional games.

✅ 2. Less Theory to Memorize (Depending on Choice)
A London System or Colle System setup after 1.d4 can be learned with one basic structure that works against many defenses.
In contrast, 1.e4 requires knowing different setups for Sicilian, French, Caro-Kann, Scandinavian, etc.

✅ 3. Greater Control of the Center Early
The pawn on d4 is supported by the queen, making it harder for Black to immediately challenge without commitment.
Many 1.d4 positions discourage immediate central breakouts from Black, giving White more time to develop.

✅ 4. More Forgiving of Inaccuracy
In many 1.d4 lines, a small mistake doesn’t lead to immediate collapse. The positions are more resilient.
With 1.e4, one misstep in open, tactical positions can lead to early disasters.

If a beginner enjoys tactics and open games, 1.e4 can actually be more fun and instructive for learning tactics and quick development.
Ultimately, the best choice is the one that fits the player’s learning style and interests.
