Who needs a book?

Those who study seriously!

No site can replace a good book. It's a pity a 2000 rated player doesn't know that.

This is a weird elitist attitude about books. The fact that they are rated 2000 is a counter-point to your argument, not "a pity."

Yeah , supporting study with books has become an "elitist attitude" because on line patzers want everything easy and without effort. Let me remind you though that for many decades books created geniouses. Even Carlsen attributes a lot of his success in books and specifically old books!

You literally have no point. That site will teach the basic tactics. Your only response is insults.

If the OP does subscribe to Deidre’s nonsense though, here is the book version:

https://www.amazon.com/Predator-At-Chessboard-Field-Tactics/dp/1430308001/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549093758&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=predator+at+the+chessboard&dpPl=1&dpID=41ljMr7JjKL&ref=plSrch

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DIKRNFO/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

Seems like a waste of $50 to me, but hey it’s a book so you must learn more!

For a beginner, that site is absolutely sufficient.

It is better for a beginner to learn to study with a book and a real board.Chess is about developing skills through personal work. Only a site or only a book are never sufficient for anything.

I've never read a physical chess book. There are so many free resources online that I've never felt the need to spend any money on chess.

This website is the one which involved me in the game. A very good pick in my opinion, because tactics are explained (you aren't only thrown dozens of diagrams).

Btw what is the difference between a book and a web book (excepted the fact that the book is still usable after a power outage but then you'll have another things to worry about than chess)?

The website is about 7 pages of text in total, with a few examples on each theme, usually at an elementary level. You are done with the website in an hour of clicking around. DeirdeSkye mentioned that the best player in the world strongly advocates studying from good books, which are peer-reviewed and edited by professionals. A solid 95% of chess book material is not available any other way or in any other form. It is literally the only professional format to get chess material that is edited and peer-reviewed. I recommended Learn Chess Tactics by Nunn. You can't go wrong with such books. The hostility towards the most professional medium for learning chess seen here in this forum speaks to a special level of stupidity I haven't seen much of in chess. These might be some of the dumbest people I have ever encountered on the internet. You guys should be ashamed of your low IQs.

This is plain wrong, there are a lot of more pages. You won't display your shiny IQ by saying blatant BS that can be checked by anyone with 5 minutes available who just have to click the link above.

Start with the easy book Bobby Fischer teaches chess. You don't need algebraic notation to understand it. Read it at least twice . When you understand all the positions from the book come back and I 'll tell you the next step.

My best advice to you is to play a LOT of chess. Analyze your losses and your wins. When you play a great game analyze it see what you did well and when you loose find out where you went wrong. Also try playing 30 to 45 minute games so you can triple check every move. Play people who are better than you! By playing people who are 300 to 400 rating points higher you can see how they use tactics or take advantage of your bad position. Watch GM's play chess. Despite the fact that they are 2000 points above you, you can still learn a lot from how they play. That is all the advice I have for you, and keep plugging away!

That's the tough way. But i learn that way. Watching Lessons from GMs . Understanding nothing. Playing the same video 3 or 4 times to understand.Studying chessgames from Paul Morphy to Magnus Carlsen. Kingscrusher, Mato Jelic, Zibbit, chessbrah, etc. And more than 1080 days

From 800 to 1560 in blitz.

Yeah, strawmen, bluster, insults but no insight.

What books would you recommend for  Players wishing to reach 1800

Scottrf

Quite amusing and I’m sure you’re never seen top players study.

Often with computers and so I’m sure they are unable to concentrate in comparison to your genius.

Scottrf

You’ve written about three books in this one thread and still haven’t said what’s wrong with the website.

Does it suddenly become more instructive if you print it off?

Scottrf

You’ve said it, but just based on dogma, nothing more. They can either buy crappy books like Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess or use a well structured well explained website. Up to them!
