Hello I'm new, what time control should I play?

Just started playing again after a break of only 20 years. (Watched Queens Gambit series). I was bad 20 years ago and unsuprisingly I've found I'm still bad. I've been playing the 10 minute time control. I seem to make a lot of blunders. How can I improve?

You can play longer time control like 30 mins or 60 mins so that you can calculate and think longer.

If you want to improve, you should stick to slower time controls such as 15+10 as it gives you more time to think. You should also do more tactics and read more books, because most games are decided by tactical means. Also check your moves at the end to make sure it is not a blunder, or your not missing anything.

Play slow time controls.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I'll try the 30 min games.

You should play longer games - 30 minutes or even better 60 minutes per side. You do not have to play many of these games. If you have the time 1 game daily is ok, if not - 1 every 2 days.

If you need a guide on how to improve, here you go:

Play some longer games like 15|10 or 30 min if you want to get better.

My rule of thumb is: only play time controls that give you enough time to be sure that each move you choose to make is the BEST one you can find. For my money, 15+10 or 30-minute rapid games are ideal. I play mostly rapid for serious play, but do 5-minute blitz to practice my instinctive play and to try out new openings.

You can take your time, or still play like how you play in blitz
