Play maximum games (rapid first)

There is no fast way to do it and all takes time. If you want to improve then applying these tips and plans in this blog may help

No fast way, find an opening you like and master it.

Play slow games, like 10 minutes

Play every day and try new methods and watch matches.

Don't play bullet unless you are getting into time scrambles often in rapid

Avatar of Pudding

Also many high level players don't recommend bullet to people with your rating range

i personally don't think you should play bullet or blitz until you get the hang of rapid, because you will get used to quick-fire moves and not stop to think.

Obviously get a coach, or multiple ones, and train all day, every day.

Avatar of ABliebs

well, that costs money

(Not the training, the coach. (though I do have a coach.))

Play slow games. Rapid, not Blitz or Bullet.

Go over every lost game trying to figure out WHY you lost. I don't just mean "I blundered away my Rook"... WHY did you blunder away your Rook?

Playing too fast and not using the time on your clock? Or playing so slowly that you ended up needing to make random moves without any calculation? Then work on your time management.

Fell into an opening trap and got wrecked? Learn how to avoid that trap and others like it.

Not comfortable with that type of position? Too open? Too closed? Too random and crazy? Too boring? Either learn how to play those types of positions, or else learn how to avoid them.

Your own lost games are a treasure-trove of information on what aspects of your play need improvement.

I suggest you play Daily so you can 1) slow down and think about each move and even research - just not using engine, 2) can use Analysis (different than regular Analysis) and you can also add your notes (annotations) right within (your copy) of the game itself. There are other benefits.

IMHO, if you only play fast, you will never have the luxury of truly appreciating the game because you will not notice all of its miracles. There are many here who would be willing to play you a Daily, including myself. But if nothing else, play Rapid-30+

ADDED: @Blueemu above said it best.

I like suggesting bullet (win for time)
