How do I set up the Greek Gift Sacrifice?

I vaguely know how to play the Greek Gift sacrifice if dropped into the required position directly, but I’ve never actually seen the opportunity in a real game. I want to pull it off, but I don’t know how to reach the required position in a real game. How do I set up the sacrifice in the first place, and how do I know if it’s there?

Hi @GraysonKellogg

The greek gift sacrifice although it's an idea to keep in mind, will often pop up in certain openings over others. So to "set it up" you have to be playing openings that kind of "allow" it to happen. The game above shared was a good example of this. But in general, if you're cutting off the f6 square for the knight it's a good start, and making sure to develop the bishop to d3.

Some extra things to look for to make sure it works is that the rook next to the king can't move as well, and no other pieces from the enemy side can intervene. You have a clear path to check the king on h5 with your queen too.

It can be nice to pull it off, but don't tunnel vision into the idea if it's not the best moves/idea in the position

Dear GraysonKellogg,

I made a video about the Greek Gift one and a half month ago.

I hope you'll find it helpful.
