Don't feel too bad. My puzzle rating is around 2600 and my first instinct was Rxg6 as well. But the problem is, if you start with that move and sack the rook, there isn't really a good follow up. K takes and then you move the Q to check, but you don't have the pieces to give checkmate. And then your opponent is up material. Your other rook is locked out from helping. By moving the Q to that rank first you've got reinforcements and a much stronger threat. Similar vibe to rooks on the 7th.

Those last few months I have been trying to step up my puzzle work, but the odd time, I come across random puzzles with a lower rating that completely stump me...
A good example is the one I came across this morning: https://www.chess.com/puzzles/problem/517486
Scratched my head for a long time, looking at Rxg6 and Re7 lines (which I thought were the most forcing), and in the end failed, only to find that the solution was a lot more subtle.
How does one solve this puzzle? What is the train of thought that I am missing here? Looking back, the solution makes sense, but it feels like this one is a lot less obvious than usual...
