How old were you when you started playing chess?

I was able to comprehend how the pieces moved at the age of approximately 8, but having a tendency to move flank pawns, and with no idea as to what a checkmate or Check was. At the age of 11, I decided to immerse myself into a serious treatise into the game, and I’ve been playing for a year on and off.

Fabulous linguistic skills for one so young.

I became pretty interested at age 18 (I was a total beginner).

I went to my first tournament 3 years later at age 21, and was about 1300 strength.

Started at 8 and got really into it at 11.

I was 11 years old when I was taught how to play chess. In my teenage days and during a little bit of my 20's I really got good at chess. After a while I took a long break from chess, which unfortunately weakened my skills considerably. Much of my 30's I haven't done a whole of chess due to being busy with work. A month ago I finally got back to playing chess. It will take a while for me to get back to the skill that I once had when I was in my teens and 20's. To quote my favorite WWE wrestler: "Finally, The Rock has come back."

Rat1960

Started at 8. Only played my dad until 11 when he allowed me to go to the chess club with him (1972).
He had only ever let me play 1. ... e5 against 1. e4 moving back my 1. ... c5
I half expected my 1. ... c5 to be moved back at the club. Of course being a Fischer fan and a Najdorf fan I beat the average club players easily.
It has been downhill ever since.

I learned the rules at around 5, but I lost almost every time. I got into it more when I started using Chess.com a few months ago. happy.png

Were you hoping for a full-on discussion on whether science without an empirical basis was theology or something along the lines of why there is something rather than nothing? Well, be it the latter or former, the neither or the either, this forum was likely generated for the sake of the chess.com community. To bring back many fond memories and share it avidly (at least those who share here are adequately avid) with others. Some may be able to take inspiration, so while this would seem like a bland forum, the insights of others will mingle and contribute to net benefit.

In this day and age, the plethora of resources on the Internet is not scarce. It is not profoundly difficult to acquire vocabulary, and while it is another to incorporate the vocabulary efficaciously in writing, a willingness and constant practice will surely reap good rewards. Something that can be applied in the context of tactical motifs and chess.

Join the Feynmanist cult if intrigued by the wonders of physics and math. Provide insights in the forum I have dedicated specifically to the cult titled Feynmanism, whether it’s a highly interesting fact, mathematical lament or his great achievements

Note that the posts should be related to some extent or another to Richard Feynman, the physics prophet who revolutionised QED and a variety of other things

I learned at the age of eight.                              As to when I started taking chess (somewhat) seriously, probably at about fifteen, so four to five years ago.

PSV-1988

Learned the rules at 5 or 6, joined my first club at 8.

Fromper

I learned how the pieces moved around 5 or 6 years old, but didn't really understand the game, or even know all the rules (castling, en passant, etc). I learned to play for real around 26 years old, and reached my peak rating of 1777 USCF about 10 years later.

Cookies124

i started 5, stopped at about 7, and came back about 10

Lc0_1
