How old were you when you started playing chess?

Around 6 when I learned the game, got a little serious when I was 18. Lots of interesting stories on this board.

I'm started palying chess 1 month ago, my friend tell me to improve my skill in this website, I want to be professional chess.

Dear Chessfriend,
My name is Gabor Balazs. I am a Hungarian FM, fighting for the IM title. My top ELO is 2435. I have been playing chess for 21 years. I won the Hungarian Rapid Championship twice (U16 and U18).
I love teaching chess and it is very important for me that both of us enjoy the lessons beside the hard work. I have pupils almost all the levels from beginners to advanced players (1100-2200 ELO).
Why should you choose me?
- I have a widespread opening repertoire (a lot of openings are analysed by strong Grand Masters).
- I have a lot of chess books in PDF and Chessbase format, so I can teach you the main middlegame plans, the art of calculations, famous chess games and the endgame theory.
- I have elaborated, personalized training plans, which help you to improve your skills effectively.
- I help you analyse your games deeply, so you can realise your mistakes and learn from them.
- I am really flexible and hard-working person, the quality of my work is really important for me.
Please, contact me (balazsgabor1991@gmail.com), if you are interested in working with me, I am looking forward to your message.
Due to this coronavirus situation, I give discounts for my new students, so my new prices are 30 USD or 25 EUR per hour.

I learned when I joined a high school chess club in 1970 (give or take a year or two). I would have been about 16. Only played OTB for less than a year, then dropped it until about 3 years ago.

I was about 13-14 or so when I first started... a friend of mine was "teaching me" but all I really learned was the basics of how all of the pieces moved. I only recently (within the last week) started to pick it up again and actually learn any strategy!

Chess for me, began sixty nine years ago in 1951, when I was 13, on a boring foggy San Francisco summer day. I am now 82 . . .

I was 10 (1966). My Dad went over the local Sears store in San Jose, CA, and came out with a card table, folding chairs, a Drueke Tournament board, and a set of black and white Ganine Chessmen. We went home and set it up, and he taught me every afternoon. We would listen to Dave Brubeck and Oscar Peterson and other Jazz artists on the stereo while playing, as my Dad thought the Jazz and Chess complemented each other. After a year I beat him regularly. I let the playing drop off in my twenties, and have only played sporadically the last 30 years, which makes me regret all the time I've wasted.
By the way, I got my own Drueke Board in 2008, and found a set of unused Ganine Chessmen a few years ago on eBay (swirled white and black). Here's a pic.

You have a very cute dog!
I started playing chess when I was around seven or eight years old. But I didn't play in my first nationally-rated tournament until around my 9th birthday.
