How to get better

Can anyone recommend any general steps for improving my understanding of the game as efficiently as possible?
What I mean is for example if you want to get stronger you can lift weights, then lift a little bit heavier etc., It's a very linear process.

With chess I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure where to put my effort studying. Openings, middle game, endgame, tactics, etc. and is a little hard to know where to start.

I've learnt a couple of openings (or the ideas of them) and for reference my elo is in the 800s. (I knew how to play but have only been playing seriously for the last few weeks).
When playing with the computer I would really like to know why x is the best move and why certain moves are blunders (not the obvious ones but the more subtle ones).

I'd like to get my elo to 1000 first and then one day eventually 1500 would be my ultimate goal but would just like a clear path to progress.
