I really want to get into chess but I am having a hard time knowing where to start... I understand how each piece moves and all that but I am a complete beginner regarding strategy. What do you think is the best path to take?

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber based in California:

Welcome to chess!  It's a great game!

Here’s some ideas to help you get better.

  - A great way to get better is for a stronger player to analyze your chess games.  If you want me to analyze your chess game FOR FREE for my YouTube channel for free, please let me know!

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.

I also offer 500 two-choice puzzles on my website: https://www.chessbylauren.com/two-choice-puzzles.php

I hope that this helps.

Tactics are what you will need to focus on first and the most. The best way to do that is to do puzzles on this site or on lichess (on this site they are unlimited for free). Also you will need to focus on how to checkmate with two queens vs king, two rooks vs king, queen and rook vs king, queen and king vs king, and rook and king vs king. Knowing how to do that will be very beneficial. For the opening you will only need to learn the opening principles until you get close to 1000 rated. Until then just focus on applying the principles and not dropping pieces in the opening.

Here is some links for some of the study guides and articles on this site that are great for new players.
