What are elo?

If you're not in the mood to be competitive, don't log in, play anonymously

Here are some tips.

1. play unrated

2. Play robots

3. Play friends who allow you to stop the game or take back moves when you blunder

4. focus on some specific aspect of the game rather than the outcome of the game. This is what athletes do in preseason training—focus on skill-building rather than winning.

5. tell yourself that the ratings don’t matter. They are meaningless. They are inaccurate. They are highly variable. They say nothing about a person’s worth. It’s only a stupid method of trying to measure how well one plays a stupid game.

good luck.

Zanerainzero asked “what are Elo?”

Arpad Elo was the man who developed the rating system now used worldwide. Ratings are often referred to as Elo points.

Elo also was the man who was perhaps the most influential in establishing the USCF,

He was a great gentleman—distinguished, educated, a true Renaissance man. He was a physics professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He raised bees, gardened, made wine, read the classics, and listened to classical (and sometimes folk) music. He won or tied for 10 Wisconsin state championships. His peak rating was likely in the low Master range.

i knew him when I was a kid and played at the city club when I was in high school. At that time, he had already retired from his academic job. I had dinner at his house one time. And I benefited from his support of junior players.

He was IMHO a truly great man.

You only learn by losing against better players, so if you never lose you'll never get better! happy.png Analyze games after playing (if you don't have paid membership here port your games to analysis on Lichess or ChessCompass). Another thing is that rating helps you to know where you are right now as a player - so over time you will see your rating go up as you improve. But if you didn't lose enough games at the beginning to get an accurate rating (I'd say play about 30 Rapid games at first for the algorithm to decide how good you are), you won't see the ratings climb up and you will think you are stuck or getting worse even though you're getting much better!

Also if you like playing against bots I think downloading Lucas Chess for free is very good.

Go see a psychiatrist. Chess.com rating is just a number. 100% meaningless.

Dont forget that you can play unrated games if the rating points are bothering you.

Personally I would add: "play unrated games with increment" ( in my opinion it is preferable, because it allows you to complete a game when you are in a winning situation without losing due to time), but here it seems that no one likes playing with increment. I don't understand why.

I understand what you guys are saying about playing Unrated games but I disagree. This person has only played I think 20 games total so far, so he doesn't have an "Elo" yet -- first goal for him should be to play maybe 30 Rapid games and find out what his rating really is rather than worry about to lose Elo that he doesn't really have yet happy.png Until you know where you start at any improvement can't really be seen.

He could play both rated and unrated, one doesn't exclude the other. Maybe, with unrated games, without the pressure, he could enjoy it more...

Honestly if your biggest worry in life is your online chess rating, you have a lot to be grateful for.

Maybe play chess variants? It won't affect your normal chess rating...
