I Hate Chess
I don't think you want to quit, I think it's as you've said, you lack discipline and patience to get better, and that's making you frustrated and making you want to quit, but I have great news, that's fixable - not easily - but fixable. If you have love for the game don't quit. Love chess, and chess will love you back.

"I am unable to compel myself to quit" ++ Chess is a game. It is meant to be fun.
If it is no fun to you, then quit. If it is fun to you, then do not quit.
"I cannot advance" ++ That is because you do not do the right thing and you do wrong things.
"I lack the discipline" ++ You need discipline.
Most important is to always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it.
"patience" ++ You need patience. Chess is a complex game. It takes time.
"to learn openings" ++ Does not help.
"to develop pieces" ++ That is easy.
"to formulate strategy" ++ Not yet necessary. Strategy up to rating 1500:
Do not hang pieces or pawns. When your opponent hangs a piece or a pawn, take it.
"How can I release myself from this torture?" ++ Torture is a wrong perception. Call it challenge.
I doubt I will ever reach or exceed 1000 again. The amount of concentration required playing in the 4-figure range transforms the game from an enjoyable and relaxing time to very, very hard work, and I become miserable. I admire and envy players casually playing in the four figure rating range, and wish I was that good. But I will never get there.
I am unable to compel myself to quit, yet I cannot advance. I lack the discipline and patience to learn openings, to develop pieces, to formulate strategy. How can I release myself from this torture?
