Recently, I realized that I’ve been doing better in games with people I know and worst with people I don’t know. Why is that?

I think most of us do. You simply concentrate more, when you meet someone you know. You would rather not make silly mistakes.

When we play with the people we know, we know how they play. For example if you play with your brother, you know how he plays so you accordingly do the moves. But when you play in online, you don't know how your opponents play. We have to understand their style within the game. Or else qe must think the purpose of each move he does to understand his plan. What opens the move (like pawn push opens the bishops) and other various stuff ;)
