It’s hard recognizing checkmates

As a beginner I find myself always in the following two situations:

(1) when my opponent delivers checkmate: “wait, that is a checkmate?! how come I didn’t see it!”

(2) when I accidentally checkmate my opponent: “wait, that is a checkmate?! how come I didn’t see it!”

I had this problem too and still do sometimes! learning different mates have helped me put some tricks up my sleeve. 😊

Same problem here! I’ve been having trouble keeping all the squares that are covered in my mind. I usually keep forgetting that one square that allows their king to escape and then I have to rethink my whole approach

This is something you should study immediately happy.png   If you can't recognize them, you can't set it up to win nor defend against it.    Finding things like mate in 3-5 moves takes a while, finding the most efficient (fewest moves) way takes a while, but finding 1 move mates is something a beginner needs to know right away.  There should be a tutorial on those somewhere in here.

I had mate in 1 and completely blundered the hell out of that game... 😔
