The last one isn’t a mate, just the kind of damage an errant queen can do against an unexpecting victim. The four move, or three move, or whatever scholars call it, Checkmate is good for people below 700, but you’re not likely to hit it against anyone whose played this game for a year.

Rather, check out the mating patterns in this wiki article:  mating patterns.Try to see what the board would look like if you hit them in game, and then work backwards to understand what moves must occur for the mate to play out. Another great book that someone recommended to me that I’m reading right now is Art of the Checkmate, by Georges Renaud.

Renaud’s book does a great job at showing you how many of these mating patterns can arise in early and middle games, making it easy for anyone to work into their opening repertoire, regardless of skill or level.
