Not sure...seen the term used but couldn't understand the meaning...being all new. lol
Sometimes "line" is used to refer to a sequence of moves like:

I am not aware of "thread" being used in the same way that "line" has been used.
I believe you're right it's just the sequence of moves.
At https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/eco-classifications , you can see some pages from an opening encyclopedia. Perhaps that sort of thing inspired the usage of "line".
