Hi Mark,
My position is very similar to yours - around a 40-year gap between being taught how the pieces move and then actually having both the time and inclination to play. Like you, and most beginners, I lose most of my games by stupid blunders! What helps me is playing Rapid 30 so that time pressure isn't a factor (I still make stupid moves - they're just well-considered stupid moves!).
Anyway, happy to learn together and play some games.
