So I lose like, all the time and my rating is terrible. I already know. But I love playing and I’m trying to get better. What I want to know is if resigning hurts your rating more than dragging out a game you’ve pretty much already lost?

The game should say how many points you gain for winning, drawing, and losing by the time the match begins. It doesn't matter if you surrender early or later as far as how many points are exchanged.

As far as getting better goes, nearly every time at this rating, I would look hard for undefended pieces. It is the #1 thing I see pop up time and time again. On both sides, when you see them on yours, find a way to change that with your move. If you see them on your opponent's side, double check that it's really a free take, then take it.

As others have noted rating is affected the same by checkmate or resignation. But you may learn more by playing through checkmate, then carefully reviewing your games.

Usually when you understand your mistake already, you may proceed resign and laid back.
