Lower level beginner opening

I read somewhere about a noted player being asked if he had any thoughts on which opening he would probably use against some other top player for an upcoming match. As best I recall he said, I'll probably throw out e4 and see what happens." Don't know how serious he was and I realize you can't do that all the time but unless you're willing to put in some serious study on openings that seems to be a good idea at this level. It gives you a chance for fast development which in turn gives you a better chance to handle or adapt to an unexpected response to your opening.
