Practically everybody on this site can be smeared by a few names you would recognize. They aren't as good as you think so just do the best you can.

There’s a few idiots on the site but also lots of nice people as well.
Do the free lessons on this site, a couple a week at least, plus have a go at a couple of puzzles a day and enjoy playing people. If anyone is rude block and report. Join a nice friendly club or two as well. Have fun and welcome.
If you fancy a friendly non rated daily game I’m happy with that.

Welcome my man 🙂 ... I guess my advice would be: Don’t be afraid to play against real people. In my experience (and this counts for loads of things, not just chess) people are generally helpful to beginners who are keen to learn. If anyone belittles you for being a beginner than they likely have an inferiority complex (maybe their mum didn’t hug them enough when they were little) so I pity them more than anything else... I mean think about it? How much must someone’s life suck to belittle a curious, yet inexperienced person in *insert field of knowledge here*

Above all. Have fun. That’s why this incredibly old game is still enthralling people today... cos it’s fun!

First, learn the basic strategy and tactics of Chess; control the center, open diagonals, pinning, forking, back rank checkmate, etc etc etc. Learning proficiency in those will give you the foundation to get better before every even having any lessons in openings, endgames, etc.

For your first games, choose a longer time limit, 30 minutes is good, or 20 if that's a bit long for you. Focus on why you are making moves; are you preparing an attack? Proactively defending against your opponent's predicted attack? etc.

Try to always have some purpose of your moves. Every piece you move should have one or more of the following purposes:

1. Attack an undefended piece, or add another attacker on a contested piece

2. Defend an undefended piece that is under attack or risks being attacked, or add another defender on a contested piece

3. Develop your pieces

4. Ensure that your king is protected from attack (e.g. castling)

5. Prepare for or execute a check against the enemy king (if it will leave you in a favorable position)

6. Checkmate your opponent's king (obviously the highest priority)

Try not to make a move that does not complete at least one of these objectives; ideally, you can complete 2, 3, or even 4 of these objectives with a single move.
