Greetings my fellow chess players,

Im a complete amateur in this game and I'm trying to learn this game so I can beat my Russian uncle (I have like till next summer 21). I just played a game against comp and after analyzing it, it basically suggested some better moves which I completely dont understand. Can someone explain this move:

I did c4 and it suggested Pxe5 but why?

thx in advance..

Hmm, well we might be able to tell you , if pxe5 was a legal move. Perhaps you meant Nxe5?   I don't see a big combination there but maybe the computer does.

I see the b pawn is hanging. I would look at Bxb5. Your e pawn is hanging too.

ow sorry, yeah I meant Nxe5. In dutch it's P instead of N. Thank you for answering : )

My guess is that the computer sees something like 1. Nxe5 dxe5 2. Bxe7 Kxe7 3. d6+, where white does get compensation in terms of an annoying passed pawn (Black needs a piece to prevent it from promoting) and Black losing the right to castle.  It also protects the e-pawn in an indirect way because if Black played Nxe4, then Qd5 would be very annoying and at least win the e5-pawn.

As this sequence does open the center and it will take some time for king to get to safety, the position could favor White in the long run, but I don't see an immediate attack. (Except when Black takes the e-pawn.)

I must say I would not have played Nxe5 myself, though it is not easy to find good moves in the position. Protecting the e-pawn is an idea as is Bxb5. The move c4 is not bad except that it allows Nxe4 and if you continue with cxb5, you are left with doubled pawns on the b-file, which usually makes them a target.

wrong location of pawn on "c4" from OP.

Here's my advice: Super elaborate sacrifices are not seen until around 1800 level players. This is one of those cases. Also just because a computer says its the best move doesn't mean you should play it. If you don't understand the thinking or the calculation behind moves they you won't know the exact following sequence of moves. In general, taking on b5 would have been perfectly fine for just about every level of chess.

I could not find the reason for Nxe5?.

So I used droidfish on my phone to analyse it, Stockfish did not recommand Nxe5.

Your assumption is wrong!

Planopticon

I assume that the position you're wondering about was before your pawn was on c4 -- so probably on c2?  I loaded it in the analysis board, and Nxe4 wasn't one of the top 5 suggestions.  Instead, Stockfish likes Bd3, Nd2, Bxb5, Qa1, and Qd3 for white's next move -- and they range from +6.4 to +7.3.  In other words, white can do anything reasonable, and still be favored to win.

It turns out that white can even do that knight sacrifice -- scoop up three of black's pawns (including those two central pawns) and end up +6.1.  It's not the best line according to the computer -- but it's still winning.

That said, if I were up a piece, I don't think the first thing I would look at is sacrificing a knight and freeing my opponents bishops -- which are doing literally nothing in the original position.

Do you have any idea of your uncle rating?

Marie-AnneLiz

If you want to improve it's better for you to play slower game.....you need the time to think!

15 min + 10sec is way better....and slower is even better like 30 min per side.

Thank you all for answering!!! I've read all your answers thoroughly and bear every tricks and tips close to mind.

I've analysed it with chess.com, stockfish I presume but I still have no idea why other engines suggest another move or what it was looking for in that move.

Find a good opening that you really like on the net like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDU83nDqCUc

If you like it play it 4 times a day for a few months.

Do 30 min of tactics every day for a few months.

Read a few hours on endgames with a good book.

And play slow games like 30 min or 15min +10 sec

And think before each move and after your opponent move,

You could be 1300 before the end of this year.

Your uncle could be 1600 or even 2000 USCF...

Good luck!
