On Line Play: Taking Too Long?

I would really like to play more chess, and I know the easiest way to find a game is online. But whenever I play a live opponent on line, I always get insecure about taking too long between moves. I end up rushing, and then making mistakes. Do other people feel like this? is this an issue with other online players, feeling like people are taking too long and getting annoyed? Or should I not be so worried about it, and know that everyone takes time to make moves? If I am taking too long, do people usually tell you?

When I first started playing online, I would take forever between moves and ended losing a lot of games that I’d was winning due to timing out. But with experience I began to have confidence in my choices. I still take my time but I move with a purpose. In time you’ll be able to make excellent moves without thinking too hard. Just study up and trust the process

The clock is yours to use and your opponent agreed to it when they accepted the match. You have nothing to feel bad about using your time allotted.

The best way to learn is to think about your moves and always have a reason for moving a specific piece, never moving just to move. The only time I find it annoying when other players take a long time is during the opening period when you should have a general idea about openings and how you are going to move and when you are limited to one/two moves. I play three days per move games and have made a move along a range from 15 seconds to 71 hours.  I play that time control because I want time to analyze and have a real life.  If folks want to play other time controls, they are available.  From time to time, when I want a quick game, I'll play with a 30 minute time control; opponents who want a blitz game should sign up for a blitz game.

If I received a complaint about slow moves; I'd probably ignore it and go on just an I do now.
