Openings for beginners/intermidiates

Do you think people in the 1200-1600 range should learn 1 response against E4 (say the caro kann), and play that exclusively, or does that delay progress, since you always play similar positions? I recall Maurice saying that the only way to improve is playing different positions... What do you guys think?

Hi Jackie. I would say you will progress best by doing what you say... picking one response and really master it. After that, or if you get bored, you may broaden your repertoire.
