This came from an article by Chess.com CEO Erik in 2017. It is probably still fairly accurate.
Hey!
I'm brand new here. Just signed up yesterday. I've only played when I was younger but super basic (I didn't even know what castling was), so I'm pretty fresh to this. I played three games yesterday and lost two of them, so I started going through the lessons. I completed the lessons on openings for beginners and tried playing again. I played 5 games (15|10), and won them all...but only 2 by checkmate. 1 of them was abandoned and 2 were resigned. Is this normal? I'm not good enough that I know how to play well in the middle and end. I'm basically just following the instructions from the lessons for the openings and getting a decent board...and then the other player resigns or abandons after another few moves. I'm sure if they kept playing, I wouldn't have won them all because I'm not good and try my best guessing to get through the middle and end. (One of the players that resigned had a slightly stronger board than I did when they resigned.) How am I supposed to learn and practice playing if I can't get very far past the opening? Is this normal here? And if yeah, what percentage of games should I expect to be dropped?
Thanks!
