Opponents not completing games?

Hey!

I'm brand new here. Just signed up yesterday. I've only played when I was younger but super basic (I didn't even know what castling was), so I'm pretty fresh to this. I played three games yesterday and lost two of them, so I started going through the lessons. I completed the lessons on openings for beginners and tried playing again. I played 5 games (15|10), and won them all...but only 2 by checkmate. 1 of them was abandoned and 2 were resigned. Is this normal? I'm not good enough that I know how to play well in the middle and end. I'm basically just following the instructions from the lessons for the openings and getting a decent board...and then the other player resigns or abandons after another few moves. I'm sure if they kept playing, I wouldn't have won them all because I'm not good and try my best guessing to get through the middle and end. (One of the players that resigned had a slightly stronger board than I did when they resigned.) How am I supposed to learn and practice playing if I can't get very far past the opening? Is this normal here? And if yeah, what percentage of games should I expect to be dropped?

Thanks!

This came from an article by Chess.com CEO Erik in 2017. It is probably still fairly accurate.

Wooooow 60% resign for 15|10 games. That's wild. Do these people play games just to see if their opponent opens terribly, and if they're somewhat decent, they just give up? I'm so confused how that would be helpful to anyone learning and practicing lol If they'd just continue playing with me, they have a decent chance at winning. I'm pretty bad 🤣 The only things I've learned so far is the beginner lesson videos on opening. So interesting.

Thanks for the link! Definitely good to know.

Don’t give up! Keep learning and you’ll keep getting better.

+taylor1194 One resigns when there's no chance of winning if your opponent plays correctly. Examples are blundering a piece and hanging a checkmating sequence. Continuing to play a lost game, hoping that your opponent will blunder is pretty much a waste of time if one cares more about becoming a better Player than losing rating points. I hope my comment makes sense.

I started playing a few weeks ago and found that people do resign or abandon pretty frequently, or just sit and let the clock run (to see if I'll resign out of annoyance? IDK). Just keep playing and have fun with it.
I do like playing the bots as well, since they do none of these things.
