Pawn capture question

Hi, beginner player. I noticed some of the lessons/puzzles put my piece in a position that I would have assumed the opposing pawn could simply take me. This is when the opposing pawn is still in its original position, and has not moved yet. Does a pawn's first move have to be forward? Or can it's first move be diagonal to capture a piece?

Are you asking how the pawn moves?

A pawn takes diagonally and if there is a piece on one of its two attacking squares then it can take it at anytime regardless of what square it’s on.

A pawn does not have to move before it is allowed to make a capture.
