Playing fast chess to learn is...

quite impossible on chess.com. After having reached 1200 on blitz again (after a few months), I've realized people still play bs stuff against me. And it's very hard to enjoy the game when people play that way. So I've decided that, since my beginner career is over, my chess.com career is also soon to be over.

My advice to other beginners is... either play rapid of at least 30 minutes (either 30+0) or other similar time controls or do your learning elsewhere and only come here with a new account and start with a high rating. Don't attempt to climb the blitz ladder while learning because it will only be a waste of time.

Trust me... only after you've reached maybe 1600 on blitz will you stop finding stupidly aggressive play that teaches you nothing or idiotic lines that nobody cares about. But it's fairly annoying to play until you reach that level from say 800 or so. However, if you just want to play for fun, go ahead, chess.com will not disappoint you.

I’m confused why you feel like you can’t play in chess.com. Agreed longer time controls are more beneficial, so why don’t you do that then?

I play fast online because it’s for fun and relaxing to me, and whatever my opponents throw at me is fine. If I wanted to focus only on learning and improving I’m definitely not playing speed chess where I’m basically moving on instinct and known pattern recognition with a little superficial calculating from time to time.

I don't do rapid here, but I know many beginners do. I like to play blitz, but people here tend to play for tricks and silly sidelines, which is annoying... That's part of the reason I'm getting ready to leave happy.png

Everywhere you go you’ll face that in blitz games at your level. If you want to have fun and relax, blitz is fine. If you want to really improve then play slower time controls and think through the positions. There is a reason dubious play gets punished more the longer the time controls. Leaving the site makes no sense if this is why you wish to leave.

i've been to several places online. Only this community has a majority of annoying blitz players. That's a reason why I'm leaving live chess. If I can't learn something from blitz, I do not see the point of me playing it anymore. And since I refuse to play rapid here, my only reason for playing here is daily, and I'm tired of it too.

but you only play blitz, not rapid?

ChessBooster

blitz is not something to learn from, is not serious chess, only fun, and is normal to go for,'stupid' tricks because no time for serious plans and calculations.

if you want to progress, rapid would be strongly preffered, with downloading pgn and analysis later on.

btw if so stupid sidelines, why you just do not refute them, take all the life gives you on plate.

basic point of chess, between two humans, is not to make better ideas and moves only but also how to use oponent mistakes and not make own ones...

That’s not true, I play on multiple platforms and players are generally the same in how they play. Learn to beat the silly things your opponents do instead of complaining about it. Sounds like you should consider a break from chess play and regroup, you seem unhappy and blaming other things because of it.

It's OK. I always considered playing here to be about fun. But I detest idiotic sidelines and I get a lot of that here and it has stopped being fun. I refuse to play blitz for fun in a platform full of people who play chess in a way that annoys me. This is a the only platform in which I've found such a consistent ratio of annoying blitz play.

Now you’re just being ridiculous. You can’t control how your opponents play, you can only control your own play.

Exactly, since I can't control how my opponents play, I'd rather not play those opponents. And since those opponents annoy me...and there are many of them, I'm giving up on live chess happy.png

Is it because of this arianashahi user? Because they played Qf3/Qf6 on move 2? You played fine in the games you were fine in the opening but made some blunders in the middlegame. In the one where you were white you were winning after Qxc5 but missed Rc1, in the one as black you were equal but blundered your bishop.

I dislike playing against that kind of stupid play, yeah. But I don't blame that player in particular. I just dislike that kind of play, so I'd rather not face it. It's not fun and since I come here to play for fun and I'm not being entertained (but just annoyed) I have decided to stop playing live chess.

In other platforms the amount of players doing this stupid stuff is far lower than in here. Since I play to learn in other platforms, I thought I could play here for fun. But it seems it's not possible. Eh well... that's life online.

Great so stop playing speed chess and all good. I don’t get why you’re making a forum post about this to complain how others play in a way you don’t like.

Because I can. And also, because it may help other beginners to notice that they will not be able to learn from blitz because many of their opponents are likely to play absolute rubbish against them.

Maybe you should try the tournaments here, as the play may be more serious.

Everyone worth their salt recommends beginners not to play speed chess and it has nothing to do with their opponents play but for their own play. I would never tell someone “don’t play speed chess because at your level your opponents will play rubbish against you.” First because people play things like the bongcloud even at the 2k+ level in speed chess and also because Beginners generally play poorly regardless, but they’ll play better with more time to think and improve faster when they have time to learn and create great good thought habits and not bad thought habits.

Your post just reeks of unnecessary whining that you don’t like how your opponents play, as you realize you can’t control it and decided to stop playing it- so why create the forum post with this understanding in mind? Just quietly stop playing it.

After reading your profile I see your problem.  You will never learn to play better chess if you block everyone who you feel you cannot win against.  Blitz or bullet or any game time is not the problem.  Your attitude about other players is.  You think chess should be fun but only for you.  To make a thread about leaving is pointless.  Just leave.

I haven't had that much luck playing tournaments here either. Same old.
