Puzzle Question

Could use some advice here. My puzzle rating has been as high as 2,000 lately. I play them quite often and had an unfortunate string of puzzles I didn’t solve, mostly due to playing them too late at night and tired. My puzzle rating dropped to approximately 1,600+. I am finding the puzzles in the 1,600-1,700 range much more difficult than the 1,800+ puzzles. I am curious what this says about my tactical ability? What should I take away from the fact that the 1600-1700 level puzzles that are so difficult for me?

I've seen puzzles rated 2000 that are beginner level in difficulty. I've seen some that are harder than that rated 1600.

Chess.com puzzle ratings are very strange. Best not to read so much into them.

I agree with llama51, some of the puzzles are all over the place. If I happen to get a string of puzzles wrong I'm then given a string of easy ones, that doesn't help at all and just gives a false sense of achievement, I'd like to see them more balanced because there is a huge difference between mate in 1 or 2 moves and a puzzle that is 10 moves deep.

At 3400 puzzles, I still occasionally get mate in 1 or 2 puzzles that gives +5 points. It just works like that, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Blame the system when you can (and rightfully so!)

Playing at your best mental state may help. I’m a much better puzzle solver at 10am than at 11pm.

I think that as your puzzle rating goes up, so does the average rating of the puzzles that you get. Because it's an average you can still get a lower rated puzzle.
