Why is there such a large discrepancy between the amount of points awarded for solving puzzles versus the amount of points deducted for failing them?

I don't see how it's needed. It should be even and fair. I string together five correct moves and get 5 points. I make one mistake, and you lose 15 points. Now I'm dropping 200 points in the blink of an eye and non puzzle has a solution anymore.
