Q+A for beginners(and everyone else)

why do you get seconds added on with certain moves at the end. ex. I could have 8 seconds left and the person im playing has 2 but when the move certain peices they get seconds added and i lose
Delay, and or lag. Take your pick.

Hello! How can I study chess to improve my game? I have a few chess books, and I have been reading and practice the exercises and games that there are in the books, and set up the board but I'm not seeing a improvement. I've been losing to many games, my tactics skills are not improving either for example in puzzle rush my record is 16.
I am curious to see the answer rychessmaster1 gives this question too. My response would be to first play a bit more on chess.com because it is difficult to determine your current level of chess understanding from a newer account. Once you get several games, tactics and so forth in, then it will be easier to tailor any helpful advice. Even if I knew the exact "problem," I don't know if I am talking to a 500 rated player or a grandmaster; one puzzle rush round is hardly conclusive to your current chess understanding.
As stands, my advice would be to get some more games in; furthermore, you may even consider posting a game of yours in a game analysis forum. Give your thoughts and comments in the annotation portion and I am sure many people on the forums would be glad to give some helpful insight.
p.s. feel free to message me and I might be able to give some deeper thoughts too.
Additionally, chess.com member "kindaspongey" often has a lot of hyperlinks that serve as a good springboard for chess understanding. This may be of interest to you https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/how-much-can-i-improve-practicing-half-an-hour-per-day kindaspongey has several hyperlinks in this forum too but my point is that there are many people willing to give their thoughts I am sure - it just greatly helps if they have some background into your chess ability at the moment. Good luck with your chess
i used to be able to select what color I want to play, now can no longer find that option...is it hidden somewhere?
How is it possible for someone to be a Woman Candidate Master with a chesscom rating of around 1000? I've just seen such an account and was wondering if that person is actually that bad at chess, or playing below her level, or chesscom doesn't verify people's claimed titles. I'm not accusing anyone, I simply found her stats intriguing.

There are some titled players on Chess.com with really low ratings because they earn their titles OTB, and only play online chess occasionally with their friends - like other titled (or strong) players. I remember watching @GingerGM explain that on stream when he was playing against a friend online who had a FIDE rating of 2300 (or something), but the Chess.com rating was closer to 1000. Since his friend only rarely plays online, and only against people he knows (strong players with GM Simon Williams), his rating stays pretty low.

Huh. Well, there goes my theory. Her title is WCM, so (unless I'm mistaken), that means she was rated 2000 FIDE at some point or another - I think that's the only qualification needed for it. Maybe somebody else has more insight.

CMs don't need 2000, so WCMs don't either. You can get titles from some special tournaments
Gotcha. I don't have any firsthand experience with that - I was just repeating what I read here.

Another possibility is that the player is not the one playing the games - hence the lower rating. Some titled players allow their students to play on their accounts while they observe over the shoulder. Obviously, this would lower the rating (as the students are not as highly rated). The reason titled players sometimes allow students on their account is because it is a good way to pair the student with a strong player; the same applies for tactics, lessons and puzzle rush lower scores and scores that bring down the average. That is why online ratings should both be taken seriously and with a grain of salt; other than the player, no one really cares about someone else's rating too much.
In short, how can a titled player have any rating around 1000 if they have many games in? The answer is because the titled player is not necessarily playing each game themselves.

Yeh I've seen a bona fide GM who was ranked between 1000 and 1500 in some types of chess here, yet his other ratings were all above 2000.
