Yeah rapid is probably better for you so you can have time to figure out your moves. Once you have some openings down and aren't hanging pieces, then you might want to try some blitz. One exception is if you are trying to learn an opening, then playing blitz against the computer sometimes helps to get a lot of experience in a short period of time. Good luck!

Ten minutes is a good balance between the two.
ideally rapid till 1400 imo
I was so used to 10 minutes when I was 1400 that I still continue to do 90% 10 minutes games to this day.

Even titled players admit that speed chess can potentially hurt their game. So if you want to be better at chess, longer time controls are a must. If you just want to kill some time and like some quick games, you can play blitz, but you will not improve too much.
