Rapid vs daily

I could be wrong but most people lost their rapid ratings vs their daily ratings so it seems most here play rapid  and I know that all the guys who play live play rapid so hence the craze.

Do people not enjoy daily? Is it too slow? Do we need that quick fix? I guess I am the opposite I prefer daily chess vs rapid. I get th rapid if you lose you can reload right away and keep playing until you win

i do like rapid sometimes for that quick fix at times too

For my part, i do like daily in fact it is really great since you get enough time to think about all the possible tactics you can potentially use to get the win, however some people don't share the same opinion they think it's too slow and isn't fun, while that might be true it sure has a lot of advantages aswell. But if i had to choose between rapid and daily, rapid seems slightly better to me.

RobertJames_Fisher

But why is rapid better? That immediate fix?

I'd almost say Daily and Rapid are different games!  Daily one is sitting and thinking about every little thing going for one or two moves, while Rapid tends to have a faster paced strategy about it.  Rapid is more addicting, Daily is more educational!  (Bias:  I play almost exclusively Daily)

My challenges are daily (so that everyone has time), rapid is enjoyable when I have two hours to play multiple games.

RobertJames_Fisher

I prefer daily! I don’t need the arcade atmosphere of rapid! But if I need that crack like fix, I will fire it up

I think the idea is that daily gives you the opportunity to think and reflect for 24+ hours on a single move, consult opening stats, get a pen and paper and write out every possible line if you want...and none of this would train you or help you learn to play OTB.

On daily, if somebody plays a new response to an opening you normally play, you can go and look up that opening and get a sense of the key themes, traps etc. With OTB, you just need to work it out on the go (and under much more time pressure).

Personally I love the daily games, really enjoy being able to have multiple games at once where I can try and learn to quickly assesss the board each time i move on to the next one. But my ultimate goal is OTB play and for that, I need rapid practice...

Fair daily you can do research etc, I have zero Interest in OTB chess but I do go to parks and love watching these rapid guys set up boards and play it would be fun to get good enough to play them. You know they come at you with the shock and awe, to fluster you and win your cash

I find daily more difficult than rapid, every time I return to my daily game I forget my plan and have to backtrack. When I am playing move after move in sequence, it is much easier to focus on the big picture

I play longer rapid games (mostly 1 hour per side), and it is completely different compared to daily games, which I play from time to time as well.

First of all, in daily you can look up openings as much as you like (you even have opening tab inserted in a daily game), so it is harder to lose the game in the first few moves.

Second you have that analysys tab so your calculation is much better in daily games.

And of course you have a lot more time to come up with a good move in daily.

In essence, if you put the effort in your daily games, you will play much better because of those 3 things I mentioned.

It is a different form of chess altogether.

It is not cheating in daily chess.

To quote:

  • You may use Opening Explorer or other books without engine evaluations in Daily chess only (not in Online / Live play)

If it was cheating you wouldn't have opening tab in your daily game in the first place.

The point of daily chess is to mimic correspondence chess that has tradition over 100 years. In 19th century at least, there were correspondence games played between people in different cities . They mailed their move to the other person and then the other person responded.

You can play it the way you describe if you don't have the time for longer live games, but the fact remains that analysis tab and opening explorer makes daily games different.

Some people will have 100 daily games at once, others will have 1 or 2 at the most. I don't need 24 hours for a move. But if you are being very serious, you will check for different possibilities and double check a few times (in many cases I don't do that, but in some I do, and much better players are certainly trying even harder than that). That checking and double checking may take a few hours and if you don't have the time to spend those few hours you might do it in segments over say 3 days. happy.png

So, as I've said it all depends on how serious do you take your daily games.

Of course, in analysis tab there is no engine evaluation bar. You can just move the pieces freely. That analysis tab is actually a substitution for physical board where you can move the pieces yourself.

I understand your point of view but the thing is that you are looking at daily chess as a normal over the board chess, where you sit on one side of the board and the other person sits on the other side and you just play a normal game. Daily chess is not like that.  It is supposed to be different, as it mimics correspondence games. It is a type of chess where person A lives in USA and plays with person B that is in Canada, and both of them have their own physical boards and you are allowed to make moves on your respective physical boards before making an actual move.

Of course, nothing prevents you to play it like a live game, but in order to do that, you should probably find either a club that plays daily games in that manner, or at least to find someone who will play daily games like that in order to not be at a disadvantage.

play daily if you time and patience, people can stall your games in losing positions for days though

Thats why you play one day moves.  You get one day, unless you choose to do a tournament then you have to live with a longer timeline but who cares, they have to eventually play

I'm glad I came across your post. I have just started my first daily chess tournament, and I hadn't noticed that or realised it existed.

Sorry, in my previous post, the 2nd paragraph is my original contribution, but somehow it got included in the quoted part; I don't know how to extricate it.

Since a longer time I only play dayly games. And never more than 4 or 5 at once. Some people play 150 games at once, ok, but I don´t see any fun in it. I like to focus totally on the games to find the best moves. I learn a lot from these games and for me its really fun. And the time between the moves? (sometimes you have to wait really long) I do taktics, read articles and do lessons.

Dysamore

I find playing a Daily game helps my Rapid games. Sometimes I play to quick on Rapid and by playing a Daily game it hepls me look for better tactics because I'm not under time pressure. So when I play a Rapid game I now look for better moves at a slightly slower pace in the game and dont rush.

The one thing I do like about Daily games is I can look for every move or tactic possible and take my time. The one thing I dont like about Daily games is sometimes I have no patience and lose interest.
