Rating question

Do my ratings make sense?

  • Puzzles 2129
  • Best win against computer with white 1800
  • Rapid rating 1053 (10 minute games only)
  • Blitz rating 657 (5 minute games only)

Does it make sense that there are such big differences?

Yes. Puzzle ratings aren't the same as regular playing ratings. They mainly reflect sustained effort. Look at the leaderboard. There are no GM's. Do you think the puzzle's leader with 65,000 points is a threat to Magnus?

The computer ratings were wild guesses when they were created. Most people believe they are not close to correct.

2000+ puzzles shows that you have good calculation when you know what to look for. Very impressive for a beginner. But clearly the other aspects of your game haven't come up to such a standard, hence the lower rapid rating.

I'd say hold off on the puzzles and focus on practice games, as you get much more out of it when you calculate in practical situations i.e. when you are on the defence, or when there is no immediate tactic to win material.

Thanks for the answer. When making puzzles I am aware that I wouldn't spot those things in a game under time pressure. I mean, sometimes I spend 10 minutes on a puzzle, and that's a lot when you play 10 minute games happy.png

That’s good though, the point is you’re teaching yourself how to find them in positions and picking up patterns that will bleed into your own games.

It still puzzles me (pun not intended). My Blitz rating is around 600. That should be absolute beginner rating right? Admitted, it happens too often that I lose games on time where I am completely winning (speed is not in my favor I feel)

But still, I am not an absolute beginner, it happens to me quite often that I win games with 0 blunders and 0 missed wins (just mistakes and inaccuracy).

Could it be that quite some people are using an opening guide on the side? (or analysis tools in general)

Even if you won a game with 0 blunders and 0 mistakes don't mean that you played well. Most likely just your opponent played terribly.

Puzzle rating are absurdly misplaced. Presumably the target audience are those who don't calculate at all, just move instantly. If you are willing to calculate, your puzzle rating can be +1000 compared to your normal rating.

Bot ratings are not ratings at all. They don't increase or decrease with won or lost games. They are nothing more than just a number written there - based on an educated guess of chess.com's programmers.
