Ratings for rapid and daily

I've started playing rated rapid games and wondering if they're automatically rated or is there's a way to choose the rating? The few games I've played recently are rated at +50 win, -48 lose - is that the standard or did the players creating that game set that? I've been playing daily for longer and know that the ratings can be adjusted - games all have wildly different rating adjustments - but can't figure out how to adjust the rating when creating a game myself. Help?

The algorithm is based primarily on recent results, probably to better reflect current performance. You haven't played Rapid games recently, so the algorithm doesn't have much to go on. It will make large adjustments for each individual game. This is nothing to worry about, it will normalize soon enough

It's done automatically.  At the start, the rating changes are large, but they get smaller as time goes on and your rating starts to stabilize.

hey, thanks for your replies.

I still don't quite get why are the daily games rated so differently - it seems most games I play will be in the ballpark of +10 win/-10 lose; but some are like +30 win/-12 lose or +12 win/-28 lose. is that also automatic?

You should play more games, this will decrease how much the rating increases/decreases for each game. As explained.

Or, if you really don't understand it, you should make an effort to improve the wording of your question. Because, your question has been answered.  The only thing I can think of is that you are not aware ratings work independently for each game type. So while your Daily rating is more or less established, your Rapid rating is not yet. You have only played 2 games this quarter, so the rating will be all over the place.

Okay, so I may not be using the correct terminology here - I'm not talking about my rating, I'm talking about the points you earn or lose when you win or lose a rated game. For example, one daily game I'm playing right now has a rating adjustment of win 17, loss -14, draw 2; another is win 28, loss -4, draw 12; another is win 8, loss -24, draw -8. I've been assuming that the players who created each of these games somehow selected the rating adjustment for it, but I don't know how to do that myself when I create a game. Does that make more sense?

I understand your question now. The first game you mention you can win 17 or lose 14, which indicates your opponent has a rating similar to yours, just slightly lower.

In the other game you can lose only 4 but you can win 28, that means you are playing someone with a much higher rating, you even gain 12 points if you draw. You are not likely to win, due to the rating difference, but if you manage a win, you win big. If your opponent wins, which is more likely they win only 4 points.

In the last example, against a lower rated player, you can win 8 but lose 24.  Because you are more likely to win.

The rating system is based on the ELO system. If you want to learn more, there is a lot of content available on how the ELO system works. It's based on a standard formula and you can calculate the odds of winning for yourself with any ELO calculator.

Players have no influence on rating points when creating a game. None.

Hope this helps

Oh, gotcha! I totally thought players were just selecting that adjustment somehow. Really appreciate you spelling that out, it does help happy.png

Players CANNOT specify how many rating points are on the line.  The system controls our ratings absolutely.

Daily games are NOT rated differently.

If you HAVEN'T played that specific format (whether Daily, Rapid, Blitz or whatever) very often recently, the rating adjustment will be large... up to 100 points per win/loss, or even more.

If you HAVE played lots of games in that format recently, then the rating adjustment will be small... only 8 or 10 points.

It has nothing to do with the format itself.

Thanks for the explanations, everyone, and thanks, @manekapa, for the link - I get it how it works now!
