Don't compare playing chess with a chess engine evaluation. For obvious reasons, the only way a computer can do anything is to run a program, and in the case of chess, assign some value to the board position, which includes many values for considerations outside of the raw piece value.

I'm not a programmer, so I have no idea how a chess engine calculates a position outside of the fact it's constantly evaluating lines and assigning a value to the lines it's considering.
