Should I play Blitz?

I just started out playing chess and I was wondering if some more experienced players could help me out. Whenever I analyze my games I always find quite a few tactics that I missed; most of my losses even seem to come from overlooking some of my opponents moves. Currently I do puzzles on lichess for about a half hour each day and have gotten my puzzle rating over 2000, but this has had very little effect on the problem. I was trying to figure out if I were to start playing blitz in addition to rapid would that help spot tactical ideas quicker. Do you think that that would work or is there something else that I should do to mitigate this issue. In addition, is there any other tips you have to get past the 1100/1200 level on Chess.com?

Thank you for your help.

If you were unable to spot a tactic under longer time controls, I certainly wouldn't count on you being able to see it while blitzing out moves. If you discover how to get above 1200, let me know. But I'll let you know from my own experience, hundreds of games of blitz isn't it. Blitz has been addictive because of the quick nature of the games, easier to fit into my schedule - but I've lost pretty consistently since trying to switch back to rapid.

Play blitz if you want to.

If you're looking for the optimal way to improve, however, it would be to play it very infrequently.

You can play it, but it won't be great for your overall development as a chess player.

I answered your forum question in this video of mine

Yes — but only as a supplement, not your main training tool.

You can play Blitz if you like it, after all it's about enjoying yourself. But it won't improve your chess. Best are slow time controls. The brain doesn't learn new structures long term by looking a few seconds at them.

I found I picked up more rating points playing Blitz. You have to think quicker and you pick up pattern recognition more quickly. So in rapid I feel like I’ve got more time and I’m far cooler under time pressure than I was. Ultimately though I know I’ve got to study if I want to push past 1200.

It depends if your not using your time in rapid you might as well play blitz but usually you play worse in blitz then rapid and you might not have the intuition to play blitz

Blitz heavily based on endgames, intuition, and time management which most people struggle at the begginer level blitz can help some people but I would start out with rapid first and if you are improving you might as well continue with rapid but if you see a slump experimenting with different time controls can help and if none of them work maybe more rapid or puzzles you learn something in each time control itd just different

If you feel like you don't have enough time in rapid blitz might be a good idea time management is key in blitz

I fail to see the logic of this. If you have less time, it won't help you see anything quicker. Why would it? And how? The only effect will be is that you'll blunder more.

Of course, if you want to play blitz, sure, why not. But it won't really help to improve in anything.

Not exactly blitz can improve faster thinking and time management which is important just depends on the person

Blitz forces you to think fast and make a decision fast. If a player doesn't have the tools to do that, they will play random moves. Blitz improves nothing, it's the other way around: puzzles improve fast thinking and that can be used in blitz.

I wouldn't recommend blitz to anyone under 1000.
