A king can even be used towards the end of the middlegame, if, e.g., queens are off the board and it's not a wide-open position.
It is said that kings are can be worth almost 4 pawns in an endgame -- as it is the only piece (other than a queen) that can move in every direction. Many an endgame has been lost because one side has his king near the center of the board, and the other player has his king still sitting on the 1st (or 8th) rank.
