I'm struggling with the same as well. It seems like as long as my opponents can avoid any serious mistakes then I'll eventually lose. I find it really difficult to play as White as I struggle with openings, I guess practising tactics will also improve my game as I'm having a hard time anticipating my opponents moves.

I'd be happy to review one of your losses, if you like? Is there a particularly frustrating game?

I will gladly accept. Thank you.

I have two losses that frustrates me and it's hard for me to choose which one so any one of these two would do really.

I'll try to do a video review of the second game later this evening.

I did consider that. The reason I played 3.Bf4 was because I didn't want it to be trapped as I was planning on playing e4 in the near future. I guess I thought wrong.

Also, how did you post the game like that?

I clicked on the watch symbol by the game.

Then I clicked on a symbol that sort of looks like this: |_ \|/ _|

Then I copied the PGN thing.

Then I returned here.

Then I clicked on the chess board symbol at the left, just above the comment box.

Then I clicked on Load PGN.

Then I pasted the PGN thing into the box.

Then I clicked on Load.

Then I clicked on Insert.

Then I clicked on Post.

Thank you so much for reviewing my game. Watching it with commentary is so much more effective that I was actually embarrassed while watching this. This video is truly helpful. I also gained some confidence which is nice as I believe lack of confidence (in chess) hinders me as well.
I guess I can comment on some of the points you made so you can get an idea of my thinking. Maybe it will help you in creating videos for players in the 700 range if choose to do that again.

1) My big blunder with Knight to e5. Yes, it was a blunder and I just... Blundered. Didn't check enough and I didn't double-check or triple check.

2) After my blunder, you were wondering why I didn't recapture his Knight with my Bishop. The answer is simply me being inexperienced. I didn't really know how to play it out and I thought that keeping my Bishop where it was would give me more possibilities later.

3) At around 10 minutes you talked about me moving my Rook to e8. The idea was indeed to swing it around and try to make an attack on the King with both a Rook and my Queen. For some reason, I felt more comfortable using my h-file tower. It was just standing in the corner and the other on was by my King for "safety" I guess. I did speculate this move and in hindsight, I made the wrong call.

4) At around 11:00 you talked about a missed capture on b2. I did actually spot it but here's where the 700-rating "brilliance" really shines. I am deathly afraid of trying to pick up loose pieces with my Queen as I don't want it to suddenly become trapped and end up having to either lose it or trade it. Going over it now I see that my mindset is ridiculous and it's definitely something I will work on.

5) At 12:15 there was a loose Bishop. I had led myself to believe that my position in the game was terrible and ended up being so focused on trying to attack swiftly that I didn't occur to me if I'm honest. I saw it immediately after and I should have taken it.

6) At 13:10 you questioned my movie Rd8. I had was a bit lost and formulated a plan to move my Rook up and maybe lure the Whites Queen away so I could capture his Bishop. 700 rating "brilliance".

7) At 14:00 you talked about a missed win. I simply didn't see it/have the mindset to see it.

8) 14:40 another missed win. Same explanation.

Once again, I really appreciate this. Thank you! I did like your video and would've subscribed if I wasnt already.

I played through a couple of your games, and it seems to me you're playing too sharply for someone who's just getting back into the game. For example, in one game your queen was attacked, and instead of moving it you attacked the opponent's queen instead. Of course that's OK, and the opponent moved their queen, then you attacked it again. The trouble is that all this threat and counterthreat can get confusing, and you eventually forgot your queen was attacked and lost it. There is a place for sharp play, but while you're still getting to grips with tactics, it would be better to try to keep control: quick development, defend or move pieces that are attacked, look for safe ways of improving your position or picking up material. At your current level, you'll win a lot of games just because the opponent overlooks simple threats, and that way you should improve quickly.

Yep, you're absolutely right. Looking through my games I notice that my winning games consists of the KISS method.

My biggest tip for a beginner would be to add the “Blunder Check” to your thinking algorithm.

So once you have a candidate-move, check if you’re not blundering a piece, mate or something else. If you do this enough times it becomes more and more of a habit and soon enough you won’t even have to think about it anymore.

Just hit 801 rating, I’m being more patient and less aggressive and calculating more than one or two moves at a time. I’ve won 16 games in a row.
