Tactics Vs Play

Hey Everyone!

I recently hit the 2100 barrier on tactics, which I think it's a nice number considering I'm a rookie chess player. What bothers me is the fact that I'm still stuck at 700 raiting points playing normal chess.

By no means I'm saying that I should be 2100 like my tactics raiting, but at least some points higher? What do you think is my weakness and why I'm stuck at this point?

Thank you!

I haven't gotten a chance to look at your games but if your tactic rating is high while your rapid/blitz rating is low that would suggest that you are very tactically strong(for your level) but lack awareness of the game. Meaning that you struggle to find the right move when there is no tactical opportunity.

You've been playing exclusively blitz lately, so it stands to reason that you won't spot tactics during a fast game as well as when you have unlimited time. Also, understand that tactical opportunities flow from strong positions. I reviewed your last daily game, and you fell behind early in the opening. Also, note that trading your Knight & Bishop for your opponent's Rook & Pawn is generally considered a bad trade. This trade effectively removed 2 of your minor pieces which are integral to middle game tactics.

Thank you for your replys! Are there any specifics? For example I understand that the trade bishop-knight for rook and pawn is part of the openings...

There's a whole lot of trading going on in your games, from the few I looked at. It leaves you with no pieces left to bring tactics into play. A lot to do with time controls, I imagine. A lot of those trade, trade, trades end up with the opponent positionally stronger, with more active pieces, or more space, or passed pawns, or more structured pawns. I tend to work quite hard to avoid early open positions in order to bring tactics into the game, but I gather that a lot of people consider that 'boring' chess, and also short time controls don't reward that style of play, because you can lose on time so easily. These are the same kind of things I'm trying to improve. Playing longer time-controls seems to help.

How much time do you spend solving a puzzle?
How much time per move do you spend when you play?
Time per move playing should be more than time per puzzle.
When you play you do not know if there is a tactic or not. You have to assume there is one and ascertain there is none.
In a puzzle you know for which side there is a tactic. When you play you do not know if there is a tactic for you or for your opponent. You have to check both.
