the chess rating algorithm?

I've never fully understood the chess.com metrics for ratings but usually it's fairly consistent, at least. However, in a game I just played, my starting ranking was 708 and my oppononent's was 780. After they beat, me they gained 14 rating points (and I lose 6 -- normal). I would've only expected them to gain 6 points, as that's usually what it is when you beat a player who's more than 50 points below you. Why on earth would they go up to 794 after? This has happened a couple of other times and I really don't get it. I have a screencap if someone needs that I guess???
