The Importance of Consistency and Coach Support in Chess
by FIDE Trainer Darko Polimac

When it comes to chess improvement, talent matters — but consistency and structured guidance matter even more. Over my 20+ years of coaching, I have seen countless young players and adults stagnate because they lacked daily structure, feedback, and accountability. On the other hand, those who stick to a tailored plan with daily touchpoints often achieve incredible progress in surprisingly short time frames.

Why Consistency is King

Chess is a skill-based discipline. Just like sports, music, or languages, daily repetition cements knowledge and builds habits. Sporadic training leads to sporadic results. That’s why my students receive daily tasks — whether it’s tactical vision training, middlegame themes, or endgame drills. Even 30–60 minutes of focused work each day compounds into massive growth over months.

The Role of a Coach

A coach’s job is more than just teaching openings or analyzing games. True coaching means:

  • Daily Communication: Staying in touch with students every day keeps motivation high and ensures no one drifts off track.

  • Tailored Plans: Every student has unique strengths and weaknesses. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. Instead, I design personalized daily tasks based on each student’s needs and current goals.

  • Feedback Loops: Video analysis of games, puzzle reports, and live lessons ensure students learn from mistakes immediately.

  • Accountability: Knowing your coach expects your daily update makes a huge difference. It transforms training from “optional” into “routine.”

Real Results

I’ve trained some of the youngest FIDE Masters in Ireland, multiple Irish junior champions, and US kids who gained hundreds of rating points in just a few months. Their secret? Not natural genius — but consistent training paired with continuous coach support.

Final Thoughts

If you want to improve your chess — whether you’re a child starting your journey or an adult looking to break rating barriers — remember this: daily consistency + coach guidance = sustainable progress. Without one of these, growth is much slower. With both, improvement is almost guaranteed.
