Tilted Cannot Break 900

How do I break 900 rapid? I am tilted and do not know what to do to get to the next level. Should I abandon my typical London system and kings Indian defense?

Hi!

I doubt it’s your openings causing you lost games. Likely it’s a tactical and/or strategic error(s) costing you games. Review your games and try to find trends in your losses. Then work on fixing them.

You should stop giving pieces away for free; I've looked through a few of your losses, and you are consistently losing pieces due to 1-move tactics. I'd say to focus on undefended/underdefended pieces, both in regards to your pieces, and pieces you can take from your opponent for free. This alone, and more familiarity with basic tactical patterns of the pin, skewer, fork (especially knight forks) and discovered attack should get you to 900 comfortably.

I would say really focus on not giving away pieces and to help you do that I’d say play some longer games bc you’ll have more time to think!

Exactly. More time per move means you can think about what you're doing. Learn to analyze and calculate better. This can best be done when you take time to thoroughly consider what you are doing on every move. Once you have developed your analytical vision and calculating ability your results will improve at all time controls.

What makes you think you should abandon the openings you know just because you're in a tilt? At that rating level (before you think "oh look another 1700ish player telling me openings don't matter", consider the fact that it's true) games are decided by tactics and blunders, not by the characteristics of a specific opening. Before you move, really make sure that you're not making a mistake (positionally or materialistic) and always spend a good amount of time making sure that your opponent isn't doing the same thing

I love these:  "I play speed chess and cant get better.  Should I study more openings?"

Beginners that play fast, and cant understand why they aren't improving?

lol...and its always openings, and not just any opening.  Its always the most theory intensive openings.

Yes...By all means continue to study openings, and wonder why you're not improving.

I annotated one of your games to reinforce my statement

In that game (and i suspect your other games are the same way) you were completely fine out of the opening, but it was tactics and blunders that swayed the game away from your favor

Simple blunders is the problem, I have trouble with those too sometimes.

Start with a plan. The style of opening determines if you are going to strike queen side, center or king side.  Always guard your pieces. Play the same opening over and over again and let the computer figure it out if you get stuck.

One thing that helps me with chess is being consistent in my play style making minor adjustments depending on how the opponent plays. Both of the openings you mentioned are common, solid openings with the potential to take you higher than your current rating. If you are struggling to master these variations or how to respond to other openings Gotham Chess on YT has several videos about these exact openings.
