The absolute best way to win in this game is simply to not die.
This is... half joke. Yes, it is redundant, but also kind of not. King defense often involves putting powerful pieces around the king, to capture any pieces that dare check. Plus, even surrounding the king with pawns is an effective (mostly) defense, since you can just capture with your king, or pawns if applicable. They're called "pawns" for a reason.
