toxicity common?

I've been playing online chess for over 20 years now. Toxicity is quite common, unfortunately. This is even more true the higher you climb in rating (players take the game more seriously, and they get angrier and more hostile, as a result).
These days, I keep my chat permanently disabled. It keeps things quiet and focused on the game.
Use the forums to find people that you'd like to interact with. Use the Live Play just to play chess.
is this common or have I just been unlucky? yes I'm aware you can not accept chat but I've been hoping to find someone who is fun to play with and a good sport but every time I accept its just toxicity. I wont bother anymore but I'm just curious if I've had bad games or if this is just what its usually like
it only bothers me because it sucks the fun out of learning this game and I honestly don't wanna keep playing to just to inflate the ego of these Aholes. yes your obviously better I have barely 120 points, being toxic towards someone your skill level is one thing but towards someone who you are obviously better than just to feel good about yourself or something? what do you gain :/
