100 elo per month!

This is not right. Actually, it is very difficult to reach 400. i have been playing for several months and I am still below 400. My chess game keeps improving. I got 3rd in my division in Legend League last week. This whole thread is looking like some kind of dream world. I have played 2000+ games and still can't maintain 400. This thread is false. Please stop misinforming people.

If you fail to mention the MAJOR changes to chess in 2023, then you have very outdated information. Don't even speak about what it's like to be a beginner if you were a beginner 2022 or earlier. Speak honestly to beginners please. Please don't decive people and pretend like chess is still the same.

@EeshvarDaslKCM I think you are partially right. Some people can just skyrocket in rating from a higher starting point. However, and I've been saying this from the get go, once you drop below 500 it's really difficult to dig yourself out of that hole. I had another acct prior to this one where I dropped to 4-500 and couldn't climb, but I was playing at an 8-900 level.. I remade my acct because I was so fed up with not being able to progress. Now I'm standing steady where I should be, around 900-950.. I think that's my accurate level.

@masterius77 , thank you. That's very interesting. i just played like a 1500 as black against a 1600 in my last game according to game review. Still I am below 200 blitz rating. Either way, when you start playing at rated OTB competitions regularly, your OTB ratings will probably show more accurately how your chess actually is.

Not to mention there's a mental side to it as well.. when I was rated much lower, I was trying to hard to win. I would make mistakes because I wanted to win so badly that I'd try to make moves I wouldn't normally do. I felt as if I sucked and that everyone else was godly, therefore I had to play outlandish things to beat them. I.e. sacking too many pieces, trying for checkmates when it's not warranted, or going for the checkmate disregarding my opponents attacks or center board play. Higher up in level you tend to breathe easier, okay, if I lose this game, I'm still high rated so it doesn't matter. I'll just take my time, play slow and look for openings. The mental game crushed me when my rating was low.

That's understandable. My health is good. mostly working on the basics of chess. Ratings can wait.

1200 -> 1600 4 years (because I played on this platform in 2014-2015)

1600 -> 2000 in about 2 weeks, then it took me about a year to hit 2100 and another for 2200-2300, haven't made any significant progress since

Once you reach 2500 you can try and get a title

As a 43-year-old returning to chess after more than 20 years away, I joined chess.com about three months ago and started at 400 Rapid. My rating quickly fell to a low of 307 after my first few games. Since then, however, I've gained an average of 215 rating points per month, and now sit at 957 Rapid.

I've done little else besides work and play / study chess over the past three months, so my rate of progress is probably not typical.

Uncertain. It's not a pattern

I cant break 800, i'm a decent player on a good day, but i play distracted and tired alot. Idk maybe 6 mos casually.

Just like any skill, variation based on ability and effort is surely huge.

Decent play at 800? That's noobie level.

I've been playing casually for about 2 years (1-2 games at night), I was able to get to 1000 pretty quickly from what I remember, spent about a year getting to 1200 and another year getting to 1350 which is where I am currently.

update, have made it from 1350 - 1430 since march. not playing nearly as often any more.

update, made it to the 1490s. starting to feel like this is about as far as i can get playing 1-2 games a week, and not actually learning anything.

i cracked 1500, but am quite sure this is as far as i can get without devoting more time. i think what i enjoyed most about chess was improving, so without having more time i think this is about as far as i can take the hobby, and it might be time to move on to something else. it was reasonably fun!

I have been playing for 8 months and I am now 1500 this is quite accurate

Another small update; just broke 2300 In Rapid. I’ve been extremely inactive over the past year though; so I’d say 600-2300 took 4 years.
Avatar of Berendonfire

How long does it take with Rapid?

Avatar of PENGUlNl

I agree with Kraig above. I recently broke 2200 in Blitz, and it took me a couple years. Didn't study chess much and played on and off a lot. Have seen players reach this level in 1-2 years - but they studied the game quite a lot and dedicated a lot of time to the game.

i am at 350 after 4 days and i feel like it is unrealistic to expect 500 instantly and 750 after a week. Idk where you got500 from but considering there are thousands below that I say otherwise. I have been doing at least 15 games a day for the last few days. i have really smart friends and I would be considered smart by everybody I know and still, a standard of 650 ELO improvement in a week is awful
