unlearning old habits

I am newly back to playing chess. I’ve played it poorly my whole life. How should I unlearn old bad habits quickly? Sometimes I just like to take my opponents pieces and I don’t really care about anything else.

Is it helpful to learn to play by a book or a specific strategy? I understand playing by the book in blackjack but I’m having trouble bringing that thought process to this game. Any advise would be helpful!
